For most of us, modernization is a must. But modern building concepts often jar significantly with the essential elements and spirit of past architectural periods. The restoration carpenter strives to work with the personality of a house instead of unconsciously erasing it.
This kind of carpenter approaches a project as the next member of an ongoing building team stretching back through history. The objective is not perfect historic preservation (unlike the approach of a preservationist), but a thoughtful embracing of what is already there, allowing architectural themes to influence the very real needs of modernization.
